Why Nummy? In 1685, as the Europeans moved into the lands along 5 mile island, King Nummy who was the last Leni-Lenape Indian Chief with a non-violent approach, moved his tribe West but remained in what is today Rio Grande in order to care for his ill sister and her children.
Upon his death he was said to be buried among his fallen people but became a mystery and was highly debated from lack of evidence. However, it is known that he lived, died and was buried here on the island and specifically on Nummy Island in what is now North Wildwood.
