THE STORY OF MUDHEN

In 1883, the West Jersey Railroad carried passengers from Cape May Court House to Anglesea over ramshackle, problematic tracks through marshlands that washed out so often the train was nicknamed the MudHen.

 

Whether it was pleasure seekers coming to visit the Jersey Shore or the working class seeking a different living, Wildwood would not be what it is today without the MudHen bringing new curiosity seekers.

With an “I think I can” attitude, the train chugged through streets, marshlands and over bridges to where MudHen Brewing Company stands today. Like the hardworking class of people who traveled to Five Mile Island seeking a greater living, MudHen Brewing Company conducts a history lesson with every sip.

FAMILY ROOTS

The year is1969. Richard Nixon is President of the United States. Neil Armstrong is walking on the moon. Four days of peace, love, and music are in Woodstock, New York, and Mike Sciarra, a young surfer fresh off the plane from Oahu with a bachelors of economics under one arm and a surfboard under the other has returned to Wildwood. Mike's mission was to create a brand with a positive vibe that offers premium surf products Kona Surf Company was born.

MudHen Brewing Company was established by Mike's son, Brendan Sciarra. The mission of Mudhen Brewing Company is to create excellent quality craft beers with detailed attention to food and bar service that meets and exceeds his already well established reputation.

A new generation

Through Brendan's father, Mike Sciarra's, the ambition, success, and entrepreneurial spark inspired Brendan to launch several keystone businesses in Wildwood, New Jersey. In 1998, Brendan recreated Dogtooth Bar & Grill and created the island’s most notable establishment and local favorite. The Dogtooth maintains firm family roots, just come in and check out the surfboards from his father’s original surf shop hanging from the ceiling in the restaurant.

 

Keeping a finger on the pulse!

With some recognition and a desire to enhance the city of Wildwood, Brendan’s vision proved spot-on when he purchased the building across from Dogtooth. After months of reconstruction, a facelift, and extensive training on the exact science of brick oven Neapolitan pizza making by world renowned Giulio Adriani; Poppi's Brick Oven Pizza & Kitchen was born. Poppi's has become one of the fastest growing restaurants on the island. Paying tribute to sciarra's roots, Poppi’s interior pays tribute to his family, past and present, but especially to his grandfather "Poppi" Sciarra.

 

 

The right time - the right place.

Brendan's latest project had been a dream for Wildwood for many years. When a run-down ex-Harley Davidson dealership on Rio Grande avenue came on the market, Brendan hopped at the opportunity to create Wildwood's only brewery, MudHen Brewing Company - a brewing facility, full service bar and restaurant. After months of research, inquiries, obstacles, and meetings, the dream of providing high quality craft beers in Wildwood was coming to reality. Leaning on the philosophy that proved successful at his other businesses, Brendan hired one of the most globally recognized and award winning brewing consultants, Scott Morrison. Scott oversaw and trained his brewers on the art of craft brewing and upheld the standards that has become expected of a Sciarra Restaurant.

Scott began brewing professionally in 1993. His career started at New England Brewing and Elm City brewing in Connecticut. He started McKenzie Brewhouse in 2001, and later Malvern in 2006. He restarted the second incarnation of Dock Street Brewery in West Philadelphia and rebuilt the General Lafayette into Barren Hill Brewery. Scott has received 7 great American Beer Festival medals, two World Beer Cup medals, and is currently a brewery consultant. Scott is also a regular judge for the Great American Beer Festival and World Beer Cup.
